The supplement NAC may treat cocaine addiction
Research shows that the supplement NAC reduces the risk of using cocaine in people treated for cocaine abuse and interferes with their need for cocaine. NAC seems to achieve this at least in part by controlling glutamate related stimulatory activity in the brain. In this small study 23 cocaine users who were seeking treatment were supplemented with NAC at a dosage of 1200mg a day, 2400mg a day, or 3600mg a day for four-weeks by researchers at the Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs, Department of Psychiatry, Medical University of South Carolina. The majority of subjects who completed the study either completely stopped cocaine use or significantly reduced there use of cocaine during treatment with the study favoring doses of 2400mg or 3600mg of NAC daily. The study suggests that using NAC to treat cocaine dependence is feasible in an outpatient setting. The study is published in the March 2007 issue of the journal Progress in Neuropsychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatryhttp://www.invitehealth.com/radio_studies/2011/2011_03_10.html
